Brf Bageriet
The housing project Brf Bageriet has several references to the old industrial buildings at Möllevången in Malmö. The red brick is repeated in many of the surrounding buildings and allows the new buildings to become part of the city's context. The design of the facades is based on large approaches such as large openings in the brick wall for both windows and recessed balconies. The framing of window openings in the brick wall is a detail inspired by the neighboring building on Amiralsgatan, the former bakery of Coop, one of Malmö's signature properties.
The block consists of four slats that are widened towards Monbijougatan. This means that when you stand in the street and see the building in perspective, you get the impression of a closed block, while the openings allow sunlight into the courtyards from the south. The doors are large and generous and made of oak with large glass surfaces to create a welcoming entrance.
The red brick runs like a red thread around the entire block. In contrast, the courtyards with their crisp white facades cut right through the large brick volume. The white facades reflect the sunlight and bring it into the apartments and down to the open spaces and plantings. Raised courtyards reinforce the sense of a cohesive neighborhood and create a more private environment for residents.
The dwellings vary in design and scale. Common to them all is that the spaces are very well utilized and relate to the dense and vibrant city. Bageriet is one of very few projects in the district with new housing and the idea has been that even households with lower incomes should be able to afford a condominium here. 147 apartments in two stages on Monbijougatan near Folkets Park, mainly two- and three-bedroom apartments. Sydsvenskan's book reviewer gave the apartments a good rating in 2012: "A creative floor plan, where a large room is divided by a high volume containing the kitchen and storage room, allowing you to walk around the small apartment. The room also has beautiful light over corners and a sheltered balcony that has a window into the kitchen sink. There is also a well-separated, spacious and well-proportioned bedroom. Not bad for 65 square meters."
Along Monbijougatan, the city of Malmö has constructed a number of rain gardens that, with their recessed plantings, will help to take care of rainwater during heavy rainfall while contributing to a green street environment.
