FOJAB proposes 650 homes in an old quarry

Stärnö, is a peninsula southwest of central Karlshamn, including hiking areas and a former quarry. On behalf of the municipality of Karlshamn, FOJAB has now developed proposals on how the area can be developed.

On Stärnö there used to be a diabase quarry where stone was extracted for the Empire State Building in NY. Diabase mining ended a few years ago and today there are large visible traces of the activity. The site is characterized by, among other things, a 25-meter-high rock wall, two deep holes after the quarrying and a magnificent view of the archipelago and the sea. In its proposal, FOJAB has been inspired by the fantastic environment on Stärnö as well as Karlshamn's historic town plan.

FOJAB proposes to develop the area with housing, a guest harbor, viewing and bathing areas and recreation that takes advantage of the area's character, location and views. For example, the depth of the water provides opportunities for deep-sea diving and the rock wall can be used for climbing. To take advantage of the proximity to the sea, several piers and public urban spaces with nice locations by the water are proposed. The proposal also includes plans for restaurants, trade and public activities.

- "Stärnö Sjöstad is a fantastic place and we see enormous potential to develop it for the benefit of future residents. With its unique qualities, the district will be able to attract visitors and become a new destination in Karlshamn," says Magdalena Hedman, Marketing Manager and competence manager for urban development at FOJAB.

FOJAB's proposal contains a variety of buildings for many different target groups. It includes apartments with their own mooring, terraced houses and houseboats. A total of 650 homes are proposed, which can be developed in stages.
Stärnö Sjöstad has been designed based on the site's conditions with higher, sheltered buildings of 3-5 floors facing the sea in the east. The houses facing the lakes in the west have a more small-scale character with 2-3 storey terraced houses and houseboats with their own piers.

In Stärnö Sjöstad, priority is given to pedestrians and cyclists. The streets are designed for traffic to move at low speed, including through many crossing passages. To enable residents to choose sustainable modes of transportation, FOJAB proposes both a bus line and a boat bus.

Once the municipality has made a decision on how to develop the area, it will be built in different stages, with the hope that the first house will be in place in 2022-2023.

Trummens Strand won the Växjö Wood Building Award.

In order to strengthen the municipality's timber construction strategy and manifest Växjö as a leader in timber construction, Växjö municipality awards a timber construction prize every year. This year's award was presented on Thursday evening in Växjö town hall to the Trummens Strand block, also known as Geologen.

- Wood is a fantastic natural material! Växjö is a pioneer that strategically invests in and promotes the construction of wooden houses and we are both happy and proud of the award, says Stefan Johansson, responsible architect and creative leader at FOJAB.

The other nominees were Arkitektbolaget and the research project "Höga hus i trä". Trummens Strand was also nominated for the Building Prize in Växjö, which was awarded the same evening.

Motivation of the jury:
A typical example of the benefits of wood construction. Aesthetically pleasing architecture combined with environmental thinking in a package that breathes good urban planning and sustainability. A landmark along Trummens Strand that will delight both passers-by and residents for many years to come.

About Trummens Beach:
The block consists of three buildings with condominiums, a two-storey preschool with lake views, a community room and student apartments with separate entrances directly from the street, which provides a vibrant street life.

The buildings are constructed entirely in wood, in line with Växjö's strategic focus on building wooden houses. The buildings have a solid wood frame, the facades are clad with wooden panels and inside the apartments there are visible wooden structures and carpentry. Each apartment has been designed to maximize lake views.

The Trummens strand block, also known as Geologen, is located on the isthmus between Trummen and Växjösjön and is built entirely in wood. It has now been nominated for both the Wooden Building Award and the Building Award in Växjö. Both prizes will be awarded on October 24.

In line with Växjö's strategic focus on building wooden houses, the houses at Trummens strand have been built entirely in wood. The buildings have a frame of solid wood, the facades are clad with wooden panels and inside the apartments there are visible wooden structures and carpentry.

The solid wood frames provide environmental benefits as wood is both a natural and renewable material. For residents, one of the benefits is that solid wood has a density that keeps the indoor temperature stable, provides a healthier indoor climate and good sound insulation.

- Wood is a good natural material and we have chosen to clearly highlight it in both the exterior and interior,
says Stefan Johansson, chief architect and creative director at FOJAB.

Each apartment has been designed to maximize sea views. To achieve this, FOJABcode, an area of expertise in computational design, has developed the so-called View Machine. The View Machine analyzes and displays how much view each apartment has and at the same time provides a grading of the quality of the view.

- It has been a rewarding process in the creation of Trummens strand and we are both proud and happy that it has now been nominated for two fine building awards," concludes Stefan Johansson.

About the Building Award in Växjö:
Every year since 1990, the building committee awards a building prize for a project with good architecture and adaptation to the site. Other nominees for the 2019 award are Stora Vallen and ICON Växjö.

Jury statement (in brief)
A secure design language with characterful and creative broken angles. Geologen has strong qualities in both material and form. Cedar shavings in the facade, a beautiful level of detail and simplicity. The project is a natural part of the wooden city of Växjö and also has an urban character in several dimensions that Växjö has lacked.

FOJAB won both the Urban Development Award in Malmö and the Green Lance.

During the City Building Day, the Dungen office building was awarded the City Building Prize in Malmö, while the Gjuteriet apartment buildings received the Green Lance. The architectural firm behind both winners is FOJAB.

The Dungen office building in Hyllie was designed and furnished by FOJAB and is certified according to Miljöbyggnad Guld.

- "It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I, my colleagues and our client Wihlborgs accept this award," says Anders Eriksson Modin, responsible architect at FOJAB. He continues:

- At the same time, I would like to congratulate my colleagues behind the Foundry. It is a great project that really deserves to be recognized in this way.

Dungen is owned by the property company Wihlborgs, and is largely occupied by the Swedish Customs. Gjuteriet, which consists of three apartment buildings, is owned by the property company Vita Örn.

Jury statement - Urban design award in Malmö:
"With high architectural quality and attention to detail, the Dungen office building makes an exemplary contribution to Hyllie. The heart of the building, the generous, north-facing atrium, becomes a shining beacon in the evening as an extension of Arenagatan. Despite the tenant's demand for security, the building feels open and welcoming. Dungen offers an extraordinary working environment; wooden walkways, moss floors and rotating (!) trees, taking the interior and staff to new heights. With a broad sustainability focus, from energy optimization and conscious choice of materials to signs that can be dismantled and reused, the project lives up to its Miljöbyggnad Gold."

About the Urban Design Award in Malmö
Since 1982, the City of Malmö has awarded an annual urban design prize. The aim is to recognize valuable improvements to Malmö's urban and living environment. The assessment is based on architectural quality, sustainability, function, innovation, process, impact and significance for the city.

Every year the City of Malmö awards the Green Lance prize for sustainable construction. Gjuteriet is one of three nominated projects and FOJAB is behind both the design and planning.

Gjuteriet is eco-smart rental housing in Limhamn, owned by the real estate company Vita Örn. The project consists of three buildings around a raised common courtyard, which overlooks a park. Sustainability targets for the project have been high. For example, low energy consumption and the possibility of more car-free living have been important prerequisites. More space for green areas has been created through car parking in the basement, and tenants receive free bus passes and information on bus timetables.

- When, as in this case, entire neighborhoods are developed, it is important to look at the whole picture for people's needs. Here, not only housing has been prioritized, but also mobility in the form of shared car and bicycle pools," says Joakim Feldt, CEO of the real estate company Vita Örn.

The buildings are designed to require minimal maintenance and to age gracefully. When the time comes, all parts can be recycled.

- "Throughout the project, we have worked very closely with our client and now we are all delighted with the attention and nomination for the Green Lance," concludes Mattias Essner, commissioning architect at FOJAB.

The Dungen office building nominated for the Urban Development Award in Malmö

On Friday morning, the City of Malmö announced the buildings nominated for the Urban Design Award. The Dungen office building in Hyllie is one of the nominated entries and FOJAB has designed and planned both the building and the interior.

The Dungen office building is located at Hyllie station. The building is characterized by sustainable and durable materials that age beautifully and is certified according to Miljöbyggnad Gold, which has been an important starting point for the design of the office building.

- Dungen is designed with high environmental ambitions as a starting point. On site, this can be experienced by the building closing to the south and opening to the north," says Anders Eriksson Modin, responsible architect at FOJAB.

The building takes its name from the grove of trees originally located on the site, which has been resurrected in the form of three large trees that welcome you into the building at the main entrance. Two smaller trees are located higher up in the atrium.

For the most part, Dungen is housed by the Swedish Customs and the interior design has been carried out in close cooperation with the client. Two office floors are designed for activity-based workplaces.

- It has turned out that Swedish Customs also wants this interior design as a standard in their future projects, which of course is a good rating that we are proud of," says Lisa Mannheimer, responsible interior designer at FOJAB.

Dungen is owned by the real estate company Wihlborgs, whose CEO Ulrika Hallengren concludes:

- When we build new buildings, it is important for us to create both a vibrant urban environment and a really good working environment for those who work in the buildings. In Dungen, we have been keen to create a close and warm environment in the interior as a counterbalance to the large scale that can be experienced in the area. The neighborhood is broken down in form and adds qualities to the site in all directions, including the exterior.

Motivation of the jury:
"With high architectural quality and attention to detail, the Dungen office building makes an exemplary contribution to Hyllie. The heart of the building, the generous, north-facing atrium, becomes a shining beacon in the evening as an extension of Arenagatan. Despite the tenant's demand for security, the building feels open and welcoming. FOJAB in research collaboration on urban development

FOJAB in research collaboration on urban development

FOJAB in research collaboration on urban development

The combination of scientific excellence and a broad interdisciplinary consortium with actors from industry, the public sector and academia convinced Vinnova to invest in the research collaboration. Chalmers Digital Twin Cities, as one of eight new competence centers in Sweden.

The objective of the Center of Excellence is to significantly strengthen the design and planning process of viable and sustainable cities and communities through the development and use of digital twins for buildings and cities.

- The best way to do this is by integrating advanced digital models into our creative processes, where the power of computers can enhance and improve us as humans," says Petra Jenning, FOJABcode Director and Industry Manager for the Architecture area of the Digital Twin Cities.

In recent years, FOJAB has built up a team, called FOJABcode, with solid knowledge at the interface between mathematics, programming and architecture. This has provided sharpened tools and increased competence in digital modeling, simulation and analysis. Several of the proprietary tools are about visualizing the performance of buildings and cities to clarify relationships and connections that were previously difficult to understand intuitively. The toolbox includes interactive analysis tools that, from early volume sketches of buildings, estimate their performance in terms of daylight, views, energy use and flows in real time. There are also programs to simulate the development of an entire city, as an interactive support for choosing which areas to develop, build and densify.

Well-developed digital tools from the first sketch to production provide better decision support, a more flexible process and a smoother journey from start to finish. FOJAB sees a clear need from the entire industry to take the step together to more informed digital twins across all scales.

- We look forward to new transdisciplinary collaborations to continue the development of FOJABcode, and we are happy to share this journey with Chalmers," concludes Petra Jenning.

About Chalmers Digital Twin Cities
A strong consortium of 28 Swedish and international partners demonstrate the great innovation potential of digital twins throughout the value chain, as a basis for the continued development of vibrant, sustainable and democratic cities and communities.

Cutting-edge research will be carried out in eight different research areas, covering all the aspects required to develop digital twins on a large scale, and to exploit the opportunities this offers for architecture, urban design and construction with digital support. A particular focus is on the transfer of knowledge to industry and public actors, in order to strengthen Sweden's role in the digitalization and development of the built environment sector.

100 - the new 70?
Welcome to a foresight session on urban development, housing and life choices for an ageing population.

The population is ageing and in 50 years' time 25% of the country's population will be over 65. They are also getting healthier, more active - and in some cases richer. A study presented at the beginning of the year showed that 70 is the new 50 and we dare say that 100 is the new 70.

What are the needs, demands and expectations of tomorrow's 90-year-olds for housing, urban life and recreation? How do we meet their needs in the planning of new cities and districts? How can housing for the elderly be integrated into the city and what synergies can be achieved?

FOJAB's Robert Lavelid, moderator, leads the following panel:

Maria Börtemark, CEO of Borätt and Seniorgården AB
Åsa Nordell Holmstrand, Project Developer Hemsö Fastighets AB.
Ingmar Skoog, Center Director from AgeCap - Center for Ageing and Health at the University of Gothenburg

FOJAB designs more and more housing for young people and students

FOJAB designs more and more housing for young people and students

Proto is the latest in a series of student residences designed by FOJAB. Having previously designed the award-winning Lund Nation Landsarkivet and Helsingkrona Nation, FOJAB is currently involved in two more student housing projects in the city, which means that FOJAB has designed close to 500 student housing units in Lund.

The first building in the new Proto student accommodation block in Lund has now been occupied. Proto consists of three buildings of three to six floors. The buildings have large gable roofs that accommodate two additional floors of smart ground floor apartments. There, good friends can share accommodation and still feel private. The area consists of seven new blocks with student housing, lush outdoor environments and a strong focus on sustainability.

- When we visited Proto in connection with the move, we could see that it turned out exactly as we had imagined," says Mattias Hedberg Ek, responsible architect at FOJAB.

The new buildings have long corridors and four basic types of apartments. Two of these are single storey and make maximum use of the large roof volume. The widely differing dimensions of the house bodies and a pattern of green panels and windows create variety in the design, and great care has been taken with important details to achieve a good quality that conveys the clean and consistent design of the houses.

Durable and resistant materials are necessary in an environment where many people live and move around. The relocation of student housing is significant and places great demands on interior and exterior solutions. The façade consists of galvanized steel sheets and coloured fibre cement boards, materials that are both durable and maintenance-free. All building materials are free of substances that could be harmful to the environment or health, and are chosen to minimize the use of resources. The buildings are well insulated and have recycling systems that allow energy use to be approximately 20% lower than current new building requirements. More than 90% of the energy used is renewable and, according to current projections, 100% will be reached by 2020.

Mattias Hedberg Ek was also responsible for the design of Helsingkrona Nation's Tornet student accommodation building and the National Archives in Lund. The Tornet student housing building is thirteen stories high and contains, in addition to apartments for "buddy living", a common party floor on the 13th floor with a fantastic view of Lund.

- These are two unique projects where Helsingkrona Nation's student housing stands out with its unique shape and height, says Mattias Hedberg Ek, and continues:

- The Landsarkivet was a very exciting project as it involved a careful rebuilding of a cultural-historical environment while adding another building to the old ones, thus contributing to several new student residences in Lund.

Helsingkrona Nation's student housing building Tornet won the Lund City Planning Prize in 2015 and was also nominated for the Swedish Architects' Housing Prize in the same year. In 2015, Lund Nation Landsarkivet was nominated for the Skåne Architecture Prize.

Designing housing for young people and students is one of FOJAB's areas of expertise, and the firm has recently seen an increase in demand for this type of project. Right now, FOJAB is involved in two more new student housing projects with nearly 120 homes in Lund. Together with Landsarkivet, Helsingkrona Nation and Proto, FOJAB is thus behind almost 500 student homes in the city. FOJAB's office in Stockholm also works with housing for young people, or so-called youth housing.

- These projects are at an early stage, and we are happy to come back and tell you more about them at a later date," says Jens Larsson, architect and office manager of FOJAB's Stockholm office.

FOJAB awarded PLÅTPRISET 2019 for Lund district court

FOJAB awarded PLÅTPRISET 2019 for Lund district court

FOJAB awarded PLÅTPRISET 2019 for Lund district court

With its characteristic copper facade, Lund District Court became the winner of the PLÅTPRISET 2019. Behind the creation is the architectural firm FOJAB.

The PLATE AWARD is an honorary award given by the PLATE seminar to encourage and celebrate innovation and sustainable construction, where the properties and expression of metals are exploited in successful architectural design. The award was presented on Thursday in conjunction with the PLÅT architecture event.

The façade of Lund District Court is made of copper, glass and stone.

- As architects, we are fond of purity and simplicity of expression. The fact that we chose copper is partly due to Lund's long copper tradition and partly because copper patinates beautifully," says Kjell Adamsson, architect in charge at FOJAB.

FOJAB has previously been awarded for the creation of Lund District Court. Among other things, it received the Lund City Planning Prize in 2018.

- We are proud that our work with Lund District Court has once again been recognized," concludes Kjell Adamsson.

Motivation of the jury:
The PLÅTPRISET 2019 is awarded to a building whose mission places particularly high demands on functionality and symbolic value. With few material choices in a solid, stylish and clear architecture, the architects have managed to combine these requirements in a new classic. The well-structured facade of the building has been chosen and used based on the long life cycle perspective, on the merits of durable and beautiful aging. The facade is thus a clearly visible quality stamp for a successful construction process, a climate-smart building and a safe operation. The design is as monumental as it is dignified, warm and welcoming. It captures the city's history, but is equally indicative of a sustainable future. For all times to come - the new pride of Lund.

FOJAB contributes to the preservation of important buildings in Sweden

FOJAB contributes to the preservation of important buildings in Sweden

FOJAB contributes to the preservation of important buildings in Sweden

The National Property Board is tasked with preserving and developing Sweden's cultural heritage through the management of 3000 buildings and large areas of land in Sweden. Together, the buildings and land tell the history of our country, and the ambition is to make this history alive and interesting.

To care for and preserve our cultural heritage, the National Property Board appoints house and palace architects. They are dedicated to the task for a long period of time, ensuring long-term continuity.

Architects from FOJAB have been appointed house and castle architects and general consultants for several valuable buildings in Sweden, thus contributing to the important preservation of our common cultural heritage.

Andreas Blomberg, architect SAR/MSA at FOJAB, has been appointed as the house architect and general consultant for Lund University's historic main buildings, all located around the university square. These buildings are important to the city of Lund and central to the university's identity and activities. The buildings are as follows:

University building
Main building and the 'heart' of the university.
Palaestra
Houses a lecture and music hall.
King's House
The first building on the university campus was built at the end of the 16th century.
Historical Museum
The largest archaeological museum in southern Sweden.

The assignment is to help the National Property Board manage, take responsibility for and develop Lund University buildings together with the tenant Lund University during the specific period.

- "As an architect and resident of Lund, this is a very special and exciting assignment. I take over from the excellent work of my predecessors and look forward to continuing to manage and develop these unique buildings for Lund University's future activities," says Andreas Blomberg, architect at FOJAB and now general consultant for the university buildings.

FOJAB has developed expertise in the field of building conservation and has several in-house specialists. For several years, fellow architect Mattias Hedberg Ek has been general consultant and castle architect for Bäckaskog Castle and King's House and house architect for the Residence in Kristianstad.

At Bäckaskog Castle, several maintenance and renovation works have been carried out, mainly linked to the hotel operations. In the coming year, measures are planned in the park and garden environments, including the planting of trees to recreate a previous row of trees.

The house architect's work at Residenset in Kristianstad has mainly focused on redesigning the interior of the residence, adapting it for accessibility and restoring the facades of the main building. An adaptation of the garden is planned as well as a rejuvenation of the plant and tree population.

- There is currently a discussion and debate in which opinions are sometimes expressed that the architectural profession only draws cost-effective boxes. As an architect, being part of the preservation of Sweden's unique cultural heritage testifies to the opposite," concludes Mattias Hedberg Ek.

FOJAB arkitekter has become FOJAB

FOJAB arkitekter has become FOJAB

FOJAB arkitekter has become FOJAB

FOJAB has taken a firm grip on its brand and during most of 2018 it did its homework and developed a completely new brand strategy. The name has been shortened to FOJAB and a new logotype, graphic identity and profile have been developed.

FOJAB arkitekter started in Lund in the 1970s and is responsible for several well-known and award-winning buildings, such as MAX IV, Rådhus Skåne, Klagshamn's riding facility and Lund's new district court. Today, nearly 160 employees work at the head office in Malmö, as well as in Stockholm and Helsingborg.

Just before Christmas, a new website was launched with the new graphic profile and now a brand film is being released, showing FOJAB's new identity. FOJAB has hired the design agency Neumeister to help.

- We have realized that our graphic expression needed to be developed to keep the same height as our architecture. The branding work we have now gone through has been developing and Neumeister has both supported and challenged us in the process, says Daniel Nord, CEO of FOJAB.

FOJAB is a brave and inspiring client and our collaboration has been rewarding, says Peter Neumeister, Managing/Creative Director at Neumeister.

Work is now underway to fully implement the graphic profile across all channels. The new website is being expanded and supplemented with new functions, and FOJAB is working intensively to ensure that a 2.0 version is ready for launch in the coming months.

- I am very pleased with the result and feel that our new visual identity reflects our external and internal values," says Daniel Nord, CEO of FOJAB.

Multiple voices on architecture at FOJAB's architecture salon

Multiple voices on architecture at FOJAB's architecture salon

Multiple voices on architecture at FOJAB's architecture salon

What is good architecture? Has modernism reached a dead end? Architects' taste versus the people's?

With these questions in mind, FOJAB hosted an architecture salon at its Stockholm office. About 100 invited guests joined in, participated in the conversations and listened to a renowned panel consisting of Joakim Larsson, City Planning Mayor, Stockholm, Martin Rörby, Architectural Historian, former secretary of the Beauty Council, Britta Blaxhult, Land and Acquisition Manager, Einar Mattsson and Ola Broms Wessel, Architect, Spridd. Robert Lavelid from FOJAB was the moderator and began by emphasizing the importance of debate and that FOJAB's recurring salons are important for the debate and to discuss architecture.

Why are many people in Sweden angry about what is new? Why do people think that architects have free rein to do as they please and therefore only design boring boxes? Is what is new automatically ugly?

Many questions were asked before the architecture salon and several thoughts and ideas about architecture were raised during the evening. Martin Rörby said that one should be careful not to get caught up in the discussion about nice and ugly architecture and Joakim Larsson highlighted the high demands placed on politicians when it comes to listening and showing consideration, as architecture is about people's safety and the environment.

There were several contributions from the audience which enlivened the discussion. Journalist Elisabet Andersson, SvD, wrote an article on the subject, published on January 27, which among other things referred to FOJAB's salon. The moderator, Robert Lavelid, has written a blog post that touches on several of the issues raised at the architecture salon. Please read the post here: Architects must stop burying their heads in the sand

If you want to take part in the architectural salon, you can watch selected parts in this film: FOJAB's architecture salon

FOJAB continues to hold architecture salons at its offices in Stockholm, Helsingborg and Malmö with different themes each time.

Axis office - new landmark in Lund, Sweden

Axis office - new landmark in Lund, Sweden

Axis office - new landmark in Lund, Sweden

For several years, work has been underway to create Axis' new office and now it is almost time to move in. The office consists of an office block that is designed according to the needs and wishes of the knowledge companies of the future.

Axis' new office in Lund will be the face of the company and consists of a continuous building that is divided into several building bodies of varying heights that interact with each other. The main entrance is located in the corner of the block facing the Ideon area and inside there is a large, bright common entrance square with space for exhibitions, meetings and mingling. A generous staircase leads to the Axis restaurant and further up to the common, green courtyard. The crowning glory is a skylounge and a spacious roof terrace with a 360-degree view of the Scanian landscape.

- "We wanted to create a profile building for Axis with an identity and strong character, which at the same time contributes to the city's diversity and social sustainability," says Andreas Blomberg, responsible architect at FOJAB.

The façade consists of a heavy natural stone-clad base with lightweight glass facades with white, angled slats on top. Once inside the building, visitors and employees are greeted by light, which is a recurring theme, while local, natural materials such as limestone and wood provide a warm and cozy feel. The office spaces are tailored to Axis' needs with both traditional cellular offices and open plan offices with plenty of light.

The block is part of the city planning office's objective to transform the Ideon area in Lund into a city with clear blocks and sunny meeting places for everyone who works, researches or visits Ideon.

- "What is being built now at Axis, but also at Medicon Village, is definitely a new chapter in the history of Ideon," says Marcus Horning, Director of Urban Development.

Axis takes care of its employees in many ways. In addition to an attractive work environment, each employee has their own Axis bike, which can be ridden straight down to a garage with shower and changing rooms, and a gym with a glass roof that connects the gym to the common areas above.

- The idea is for the office to feel a bit like a home at work, with plenty of areas for employees to meet and socialize," says Andreas Jentsch, supervising architect, FOJAB.

FOJAB designed Lund's new district court - received Lund's urban development award

At the municipal council meeting on Thursday, FOJAB received the 2018 Lund Urban Design Award for the design of Lund's new district court.

- Based on the conditions of the site and a program with high demands on safety, function, environment and quality, we have designed a modern building, which at the same time well connects to Lund's building tradition, says Kjell Adamsson, architect and vice president of FOJAB.

In 1990, the Urban Development Prize was awarded for the first time. The prize was established by LKF, as a gift to the 1000-year anniversary of the municipality of Lund. The purpose of the prize is "to reward architects who have made a meritorious contribution to the development of the cityscape in the municipality of Lund. Particular consideration shall be given to architectural efforts that combine the development of the cityscape, good function for users and beauty values."

- I am proud and happy that our joint work has been recognized and it is a great honour to receive this award," concludes Stefan Johansson, architect at FOJAB.

Jury statement
Lund Urban Development Prize 2018 awarded to the architects of the New District Court! A complex building, with high demands on security and efficient flows, has been designed with a focus on functionality, dignity and transparency towards the surrounding urban space. Sophisticated and well thought-out choice of materials, high quality exterior and interior, gives an experience of sculptural dynamics and care from the whole to the details. A classically ordered architecture in modern costume, where the stepped building volume lands beautifully at the entrance square in the south, and the water mirror with its artwork meets Bjerredsparken in a refined way. The building makes a strong visual impression at close range, and at the same time forms a stately and important backdrop when viewed from Clemenstorget on the other side of the railroad. The New District Court will be an important cornerstone in the development of Lund C. As an ambitious and committed client, Specialfastigheter has attributed a high value to careful design and thus Lund has been enriched with an architectural jewel! We warmly congratulate FOJAB architects!

FOJAB designed Sweden's most modern court

FOJAB designed Sweden's most modern court

FOJAB designed Sweden's most modern court

Spacious, bright and impressive. This is how Lund's new district court has been described. As part of "the new Lund" west of the railroad tracks, the district court rises and gives the city a new silhouette. The Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson attended the inauguration and architect Kjell Adamsson from FOJAB gave a speech in which he described his thoughts and ideas when Lund District Court was designed. Since then, he and the other architects involved in the project have had several opportunities to show and tell about the architecture.

- Based on the site's conditions and a local program with high demands on safety, function, environment and quality, we have designed a modern building, which at the same time well connects to Lund's building tradition, says Kjell Adamsson, FOJAB.

The facade of the District Court is made of copper and glass, resting on a high limestone plinth. Based on the needs of the court, several entrances have been distributed throughout the building and there are terraces on the roof for the court's staff. Outside the court, a water mirror reflects the light and there is also a work of art by the artist Meta Isæus-Berlin.

Once inside, visitors are greeted by undulating wooden panels in oiled ash. There are four security zones for the public, prosecutors and jury members, other staff and detainees. The public areas are located on two levels that open up with large glass areas to the park outside.

- It was an honor to be entrusted with the design of Lund District Court. The process has been exciting and we are very proud of the result," concludes Kjell Adamsson, FOJAB.

Klagshamn's riding facility nominated for Region Skåne's architecture prize

Region Skåne's architecture prize is awarded to a project that looks at the overall perspective of spatial connections. This can, for example, be about how the qualities of places are utilized and developed in new construction. Klagshamn's riding facility, designed by FOJAB architects, is one of the nominated entries for this year's award.

At the headland of Klagshamn, south of Malmö, there are shallow sandy beaches that are excellent for horseback riding. For a long time Klagshamns Ryttarsällskap was located here in a disused concrete factory. When the city of Malmö planned a new riding facility, it was natural to build on the same site as before, and FOJAB was commissioned to design the new riding facility.

The stables and riding hall have distinctive cohesive roof surfaces and the positioning of the buildings provides views of the Öresund.

Proven building techniques are combined with recycled brick features and innovative material choices.

- Klagshamn's equestrian facility has put the focus on a new generation of equestrian facilities that represent good animal and work environment together with sustainable materials, plenty of daylight and fresh air. We are both proud and happy that the facility is nominated for Region Skåne's architecture award, says Mats Molén, architect at FOJAB.

The winner of the architecture prize will be announced at Kreativa Skåne on November 22. Other nominees are Holma torg, Malmö, by Arkitektlaget Skåne, HamnOasen, Landskrona, by STADSTUDIO and Villa Kristensson, Åhus, by Chahrour Huhtilainen.

FOJAB has designed the new Aromalund residential area.

FOJAB has designed the new Aromalund residential area.

FOJAB has designed the new Aromalund residential area.

The urban and modern residential area Aromalund has been created at the King Oscar Bridge, on the border between the central stone city and the leafy residential areas of Lund.

Aromalund consists of two U-shaped residential blocks with varying building structures in different facade materials on between four and six floors. The area is being built just a few hundred meters north of the city center and is suitable for those who want to be close to everything. The name Aroma refers to the site's history as an apple orchard, and a number of Aroma trees will be planted in the new area.

- "When we designed Aromalund, we created four different residential characters. These characters are based on four different ideas about housing and are reflected in everything from floor plans, choice of materials, stairwells to the exterior design," says Joachim Lundqvist, commissioned architect at FOJAB.

The four characters add variety to the neighborhood and everyone can find their favorite. The four residential characters are:

Family function
Functional city apartments with large bright entrances. They offer a combination of open floor plans for socializing and separate rooms for private time.

Stylish conviviality
Bright and elegant accommodation with large open living areas. White pigmented floors and kitchen island with white marble countertop to gather around.

Classical composition
For those who dream of a central penthouse with rooms in line, herringbone parquet and mirrored doors. A sense of the grand architecture of the last century in a modern setting.

Creative concept
Innovative apartments with a townhouse feel, most of them on one floor. Open room connections on two levels and square smart solutions, durable stone floors downstairs and cozy textile carpet upstairs.

Sales are currently under way for the first phase, Block B, which will be the heart of the area and consists of five buildings with a total of 84 apartments with between one and six rooms and kitchens. The largest apartments are 209 square meters, located on the top two floors and include a large roof terrace. Only two of this exclusive apartment type are available and they were quickly booked when sales started. The new apartment holders can look forward to moving in at the end of 2020. When sales of the next phase begin, the remaining 80 or so apartments will be offered.

What is Aromalund?

Number of dwellings: 165 in total, of which 84 in the first phase.
Size of the apartments: 1-6 rooms, 28-209 sqm.
Developer: Sjöson Fastighetsutveckling
Broker: Fastighetsbyrån Lund
Architect: FOJAB

Daniella Witte, a well-known interior designer to many, has been hired for interior design and styling.

Top international conference on digital developments in architecture and civil engineering

Top international conference on digital developments in architecture and civil engineering

Top international conference on digital developments in architecture and civil engineering

Every two years, the AAG - Advances in Architectural Geometry - conference is held somewhere in Europe. Now it has come to Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, which is hosting it for a few days in September.

Swedish and international architects, engineers and mathematicians will participate in the conference, where architecture meets mathematics and engineering. There will also be 15 workshops led by researchers and practitioners from around the world. FOJAB arkitekter believes that the conference is both urgent and important for the development of architecture and has therefore chosen to become a sponsor.

- This is one of the leading conferences in the field, which I look forward to participating in together with my colleagues, says Henrik Malm, architect at FOJAB and development manager in FOJABcode. The conference is important to spread knowledge internationally about the field of Computational Design, which is a specialist area in the borderland between design, digitization, programming and mathematics.

Several interesting speakers will take part, including Caroline Bos, one of the founders of UNStudio, and Philippe Block, professor at ETH Zurich and head of the Block Research Group (BRG).

Examples of issues to be addressed during the conference are:

  • How can we develop the architect's design process in a digital world?
  • How did digital tools enable the creation of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi?
  • How do Philippe Block and Chris Williams challenge the boundaries of scale structures?

- The field of Computational Design and Production helps us to investigate and test alternative concepts at an early stage, in order to make wise and informed design and production choices. This is where Swedish civil engineering needs to develop. The conference gives us a glimpse of where international architecture and engineering stands today," concludes Karl-Gunnar Olsson, Professor of Architecture and Engineering at Chalmers.

The AAG starts on September 22-23 with workshops, followed by a conference on September 24-25.

About Henrik Malm, architect at FOJAB:
MSc in computer engineering and PhD in mathematics. Researcher at the Department of Biology in Lund, where he developed night vision cameras inspired by the eyes of nocturnal insects. Then studied architecture, with a year at the Center for IT and Architecture (CITA) at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts. Worked for four years at Foster+Partners in London, a well-known office founded by Lord Norman Foster.

What is Computational Design?
The Computational Design area focuses on the development of new digital design tools to push the boundaries of what is possible to design, engineer and build. These tools can, for example, help create extra complex building forms or analyze environmental factors, such as daylight and sunlight hours, or simulate how people move through a building. These new digital tools create an integrated design process that is flexible and can adapt to the specific conditions and goals of the project.

FOJABcode is the department within FOJAB arkitekter that focuses on design research and method development within Computational Design. The group works on projects at many different scales, ranging from simulation programs for urban development, advanced facade design and interior projects. The group also investigates how digital developments are changing the role of the architect, the built environment and the construction process.

Malmö needs a new Pildammspark

Malmö needs a new Pildammspark

Malmö needs a new Pildammspark

FOJAB arkitekter participates in the exhibition DESIRE - architecture for our future living environment. The exhibition is shown 23 August - 23 September at Form/Design Center in Malmö and is hosted by Architects Sweden and Form/Design Center.

In its involvement, FOJAB has sought to answer the question of how socially sustainable development can be ensured as the city grows and how public spaces and parks are given sufficient value for future generations. By analyzing Malmö residents' favorite places, they have approached the answer to how architects can create the living environments of the future.

Malmö is Sweden's fastest growing city and will continue to densify and develop with new buildings in the coming years. Malmö is also the urban area in Sweden where most people have to share every park and even more people will have to share the same areas as the city grows.

- "We wanted to find out which places in Malmö that the people of Malmö like best, which places are the real gems. The results, and our proposal for future living environments, are presented at the exhibition," says Magdalena Hedman, landscape architect LAR/MSA at FOJAB.

An open vernissage will be held on Thursday, August 23 at 17-19, where representatives from FOJAB will be present to tell you more about their project, which has resulted in a book.

- I can already tell you that we think Malmö needs a new Pildammspark," Hedman concludes.

The Form/Design Center is run by Svensk Form Syd, which is a non-profit organization and part of the Svensk Form association. The center is run with support from the City of Malmö, Region Skåne and the Swedish Arts Council. In the exhibition DESIRE - architecture for our future living environment, architectural offices, public actors and universities in southern Sweden discuss what is important for the architecture of the future - from interior design to house architecture, landscape and urban development.

The neonatal ward at Helsingborg Hospital is completed

The neonatal ward at Helsingborg Hospital is completed

The neonatal ward at Helsingborg Hospital is completed

In March, Helsingborg's new neonatal ward opened in the eastern wing of the hospital. FOJAB arkitekter, in collaboration with BSK arkitekter, has designed a modern intensive care unit to meet today's and tomorrow's neonatal care with a focus on patient and family-centered care.

The intensive care unit is for babies who are born prematurely or are otherwise sick and need treatment after birth. The new neonatal unit is built for a total of 12 beds. Of these, four are ICU rooms, seven are mother-baby beds and one is an isolation room.

FOJAB was commissioned to design a ward that can meet current and future requirements for efficient and safe care and, not least, the most comfortable environment possible for the parents who will be staying in the ward. The old premises were cramped and the design was not in line with modern neonatal care. Today's neonatal care puts the child and the family at the center and believes that parents should be together with their child throughout the care period. There should also be opportunities for shared care, i.e. the sick mother can be cared for in the same room as the newborn baby.

- The refurbishment is an important investment for the future, providing security for parents and their children and a better working environment for staff. The new premises are larger, brighter and built for care in single-patient/family rooms, which puts the patient and family in focus and reduces the risk of infection spreading on the ward. "The children can be very sensitive and it is important that the environment around the children is adapted so that they can develop and grow at their own pace," says Anna Hjort, responsible architect at FOJAB.

An important starting point in the work on the ward has been daylight, with a focus on lots of glass and views. The patient rooms have been designed with glass doors so that staff can keep an eye on the patient, and to let more light into the premises. Colors and material choices are consistently light with wood elements and permeate the entire eastern wing.

- Together with FOJAB, we have a team that has successfully worked on the new wards for a long time and with high quality. The project has given us the opportunity to develop our experience of large hospital projects for Region Skåne and to grow as an office in Malmö. With this capacity, we are now moving forward with a number of new sub-projects within the framework of the new hospital. These include new facades, a new freight and logistics center and laboratories," says Måns Adamson, Business Manager for Healthcare at BSK Arkitekter.

International day of light

International day of light

International day of light

Today, 16 May 2018, UNESCO is organizing for the first time the International Day of Light. Around the world, the focus is on the importance of lighting for people's lives in the world. We took the opportunity to ask some questions to our lighting architect Viveca Rosencrantz.

How important is light in our built environment?
Architecture and light are intimately linked. The interplay between darkness and light makes rooms, materials and colors visible. Light and sound environments interact. Spatial perception, orientation, safety, stimulation and, not least, health depend on quality light. There has been much focus on energy savings. The issue of social and economic sustainability is just as important in this context. We need to draw on existing research, take a long-term view and take responsibility for the issue of light.

Why are we not prioritizing light in the construction process?
This is partly due to a lack of knowledge at several influencing and decision-making levels. The concept of quality is not covered in the current standards, which focus on lux numbers, a very blunt instrument. Independent research is also not keeping up with the rapid technological development on the LED side and there is still a lack of standards in several areas that can provide guidance.

The lighting issue is owned early on in the design process by the electrical consultant, who often chooses to draw general solutions focused on quantity. At that stage, there is insufficient information about activities, furnishings and colours. Factors that are very much part of the quality of the final lighting design. There is therefore also no coordination between general and environmental lighting.

What can we as architects do?
A lot. First of all, arming ourselves with knowledge, our own or others', and raising and actively pursuing the issue of light quality in time. Daylight management with solar shading and glare protection needs to be integrated into the architecture. It is also important to include the work of interior designers early in the process. Then there are completely different opportunities to get a differentiated, business-adapted lighting and avoid dazzling general overlighting. Ceiling-mounted LED panels are routinely designed today, with price and easy installation as arguments. A lighting million program that we already need to deal with in the form of negative effects on health and well-being at workplaces and schools. Here we can take help from synergonomists and lighting designers.

Aromalund - central Lund gets a new neighborhood

Aromalund - central Lund gets a new neighborhood

Aromalund - central Lund gets a new neighborhood

At King Oskar's Bridge, a few hundred meters north of Lund C, we are designing two residential blocks and an office building for the property development company Sjöson. The blocks are given a strong character, great variation in expression and high quality materials.

Aromalund will be an attractive and urban neighborhood with a focus on a sustainable lifestyle and people at the center. The site where the neighborhood is emerging has historically been part of northern Lund's plantations and apple orchards. The history of the site together with the Aroma apple, Skåne's landscape apple, is the basis for the name Aromalund.

The development consists of an office block in the southern part and two residential blocks with green courtyards and a common square. The residential buildings consist of 165 homes in ten different buildings oriented around raised courtyards. FOJAB's ambition is to give the neighborhoods great variation in expression with facade materials consisting of brick and light-colored plaster.

- The idea has been to create a variety of selected characters - classic, minimalist, earthy and innovative. The different characters will reflect everything from facade design to floor plan. The residential courtyards will also draw inspiration from the different characters, which will contribute to a great variety in the courtyard environment," says Joachim Lundqvist, commissioned architect for the residential block.

A solitaire in the middle of Aromalund
The office block consists of a character building made up of several interacting volumes. The building height is varied to meet both the higher existing buildings adjacent to Kung Oskars bro and the adjacent lower housing in the east. At Kung Oskars väg in the southeast there is a welcoming entrance square and the main entrance to the office. The entrance square is connected by an atrium which is the communicative node of the office section, with a walk around the atrium encouraging spontaneous and planned meetings. The office floors can be subdivided for different actors, with views and interaction with the atrium setting the tone. Up on the roof there is a penthouse with unobstructed views of Lund, as well as terrace areas and green roofs.

With an interesting play of volumes in different heights and indentations and a homogeneous facade material, a solitaire is created in the middle of the new neighborhood.

Joachim Lundquist is the architect responsible for the residential block, while Kjell Adamsson is responsible for the office building. The project team also includes architects Karin Andersson, Mattias Åström, Andreas Jentsch, Haydar Alward and Emma Carlbom, project manager.
