Industrial architecture that gives companies an edge

Industrial buildings are not just shells around a process - they are strategic tools that support and develop production and business. FOJAB helps companies create smart, safe and flexible facilities that can grow with their business.

Pandemics, wars, technological change and a US president who loves tariffs have shaken up global production. We are in the midst of a historic transition and the need for restructuring is clearly visible among industrial companies. Major investments are also being made in infrastructure. Many of the water and wastewater treatment plants built in the 1950s and 60s have reached the end of their lifespan.

FOJAB is ready to assist anyone who needs to build new, extend or rebuild.

- We have extensive experience and knowledge from various types of industrial projects for many different types of customers. Today we work for both state, municipal and private clients, with a wide range of projects in the engineering industry, high-tech laboratories, infrastructure and water and wastewater treatment plants, says Anders Lundin, architect and head of business area industry at FOJAB.

The key to good industrial architecture is to be familiar with the business and understand the needs, says Anders.

- Our task as architects is to find solutions that support companies in their development. We work closely with builders, process engineers and users, which allows us to optimize the plant with regard to all parameters. The earlier we get involved in projects, the more the customer benefits from our expertise. We can then influence the design and make the building more efficient and smaller, both in terms of area and volume. This is positive for both the economy and the climate.

The key is to create buildings that meet the needs of today - but also those of tomorrow.

- We help analyze the business and the potential and limitations of the property. There should be a robustness, a plan for how a gradual expansion can be done without having to throw all the balls in the air. We want to avoid building new. If we can use existing buildings for new functions, much is gained," says Anders.

It is a complex puzzle to solve. In addition to the technical processes and logistics of production, it's about creating a good working environment for staff with a canteen, changing rooms and offices. Often workshops, warehouses and laboratories for research and quality control are also needed. Close cooperation with the client is important for the best results. FOJAB's architects work in digital models and continuously check the project in a virtual reality.

- The customer can stand in the VR studio and really feel how it feels to move in the new environment. Is there enough space here, can we cut a few centimeters there?

Security has become increasingly important in recent times.

- We work with shell protection, locks and protection zones to ensure a high level of security. We also have experience in designing security-classified projects with all that this entails in the handling of documents and model files.

"Clients who have a clear vision, an understanding of the sustainability aspects and who see the value in the design are extra fun to work with," says Anders.

- An out-of-the-box facade with a view of greenery is not only nice and pleasant. An attractive working environment is also a competitive advantage when it comes to attracting and retaining the right skills. A little extra money on the design gives a lot back.

If he could make one more wish of the clients, it would be to dare to invest more in recycled materials.

- There is more uncertainty and it takes time to do things differently than usual. At the same time, this is something we have to go through to move forward. At FOJAB, we have done this before and can be a good support for our customers in all parts of the process, so that more people dare to take the step.
