Lokstallarna
When new areas are planned, the order of events is usually to build the houses first and then fill them with life. In Lokstallarna, the opposite is true. Here, life in the form of a food workshop, circus hotel, creators and craftsmen have already taken their place in the existing cultural environments.
Our work with Lokstallarna began with a parallel assignment and has continued with subsequent documentation for detailed plans. The fact that the activities - and the feeling - that exist in the area today should be able to remain, has been an important starting point for the site development. As the area grows, further cross-connections will be able to be developed between businesses, residents and civil society.
The first phase includes around 1,000 homes in 4-6-storey city blocks and townhouses, a preschool, squares and plazas, and lots of greenery in the form of a district park and area parks with space for urban farming. In a future phase, a primary school with a sports hall, around 800 more homes and another preschool are also planned.
Lokstallarna will become a climate-conscious neighborhood where the new buildings will be able to meet the requirements of LFM30 (Local Roadmap Malmö) and with common solutions for mobility, sharing services and recycling.
The new district will build on the feeling of being a ”city within the city” like today's Kirseberg, while being better linked to the rest of Malmö. The historic buildings and the large green park will be the heart of the area with new buildings as a frame around it. Some parts of the railroad tracks will also be preserved and a traverser from the workshop era will have a central place. The most important historical routes and sightlines are maintained and developed into green routes through the district.
