Hotel Draken

Clarion Hotel Draken is located at Järntorget in Gothenburg. Incorporated into the old Folkets Hus quarter from the 1940s, the hotel is a cultural meeting place at the intersection of the city center, Linnéstaden and Masthugget. Several of Folkets Hus' existing buildings, designed by Nils Einar Eriksson, are protected as cultural monuments with preservation requirements. These include the Folkteatern and the historic Draken cinema, which is part of the hotel project and has also given its name to it.

Large parts of the lower floors of the existing block will be used by the hotel, including the hotel reception, lobby, lobby bar, breakfast room and bistro. Upstairs there is a larger conference facility that includes the Draken cinema. The hotel's SPA facility is also located here. The 474 hotel rooms are housed in a 34-storey building in the courtyard of the block. This is connected to the existing buildings via an atrium passage, which also forms an internal connection between Järntorget and the new park created north of the hotel. The top three floors of the building contain public facilities in the form of conference rooms, a brasserie and a sky bar with an associated roof terrace. These floors can be accessed directly from the hotel foyer via two glassed-in express elevators.

One of the project's goals was to create a ”living room for Gothenburgers” filled with art, music, theater, pop-ups and design. The hotel helps to make the area around Järntorget safer and activates the northern part of the square even during the late hours of the day.

Structurally, the hotel is a rational building but not without challenges. To avoid laying foundations near the mouth of the Gota Tunnel, the building's footprint has been minimized and instead cantilevers to the north a few floors above ground to accommodate more much-needed square meters. Even on the top floors, where the brasserie and sky bar are located, the building cantilevers out a few meters, giving it its characteristic silhouette. Hotel Draken is environmentally certified with LEED Gold. The building is part of the Masthuggskajen urban development project and follows the sustainability program that forms the basis for the district's development.

The new construction and remodeling of Clarion Hotel Draken is designed and planned by Erséus Arkitekter, which since 2025 is part of FOJAB.
